Self-improvement,  Take-Control-of-your-Life

If you really want to change your life, make a decision. It all starts with a decision; Your life is controlled by your decisions.

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction
(Deuteronomy 30:15)

The moment I realized that I have a major role to play in how my life turns out; that was the day I decided to be more careful concerning making decisions that affect my life and future.

Prior to this period I often made decisions purely on influence and out of fear. I made decisions so that I will please everyone without considering how and what impact it will have on my future.

What is a decision?

Having a clear definition of what decision is can help you understand why you have to be the one to make all the important life decisions in your life; and will help you make better decisions.

“simply put, decision is a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration of several alternatives

Let us also take a look at another definition from Cambridge University Dictionary,

a decision is a choice that you make about something after thinking about several possibilities.

So from the definition, we have seen that there are certain parameters that must be in place before a decision can be taken. Look closely at the underlined words –

  • Decision is a choice
  • Before you make a decision, you have to think it through, possibly sleep over it
  • There are always other options, alternatives that you could choose from

The decision-making process is an art that every human being should master. Because what we will become and what course our life will take is dependent on the decisions we make daily.

What then is decision-making

“Decision-making involves the process of choosing alternatives based on the values, preferences and beliefs of the decision maker” – Wikipedia

Let us also look at another definition of decision-making.

Decision-making is the process of making a choice between a number of options and committing to a future course of action.

From both definitions, you can see that decision-making is a process of choosing from alternatives.

Looking at the first definition, we can see some of the factors that influence the decision-maker: values, preferences, beliefs. Other factors may include age, mood, exposure and so many others.

Having considered these factors, you will realize how important the decision-making process is and why you should be the one making decisions that concerns all important aspect of your life.

You shouldn’t trust someone else to make a decision that will be in your best interest always; because they will do so based on their values, personal preferences, beliefs and other influencing factors.

Let us take starting a business for instance, If you have a business idea, but you have to depend on someone else to make the decision on whether you can go ahead and launch the idea. The person may say no based on his previous failures or based on his belief that you may not be able to take the pressure that might come with the business.

By the time the person, you trust so much to decide for you on whether to go ahead with your business idea and launch it tells you otherwise and gives you reasons why you shouldn’t turn that idea into a business.
You may just accept that you are not capable of launching that business or even any business for that matter.

I have seen a lot of women religate their right to decision-making to other people; either their husbands, boyfriends, partners, parents, pastors, mentors, facebook support groups, and even their children.

These women end up existing as objects and tools in the hands of those they have entrusted their life to. This is such a sad situation.

If you refuse to use the brain God has given to you to think and make informed decisions that will determine how your life turns out then you have no one to blame but yourself if your life is going the way you don’t want it to go.

As a sane adult woman, no human being should make the important decisions for you. Being an adult requires responsibility and making informed decisions on important areas of your life is one of such responsibilities.

Refusing to do so is an irresponsible act. It proves that you are not willing to take responsibility for your life.
